LECTORS

Lectors are people of faith who have nurtured a relationship with God and have formed their lives based on the gospel. This is the Lector's mission; To proclaim the Word of God. Lectors personally encounter the Word of God and through them, the people of God embrace the Divine Word. “For in the Mass is spread the table both of God’s Word and of the Body of Christ, and from it the faithful are to be constructed and refresh.” General instruction of the Roman Missal #28. As lectors: What do we offer? We offer praise to the one who sits on the throne and to the Lamb. We open our hears together, so that God might speak to us.

Listening is one of the ways that we express our unity. We are one when we unite our hearts in faith, when we hang onto every word as we do with those we love, when we make ourselves still, rather than miss a single word. When we do this together, we are one. The General instruction of the Roman Misal states # 7 states: “In the Mass is spread the table both of God’s Word, and of the Body of Christ, and from it the faithful are to be instructed and refresh.”

In the proclamation of the word, the people will realize how well the lector understands the reading. The lector’s preparation will be evident by the way the reading sounds. The preparation is more than technical, grammatical, and mental. It is, above all, SPIRITUAL. The Lector is a leader, a model for the behavior of others. The Lector is responsible for helping to form the community at Sunday Mass. While the Lector speak, all will listen as one body. “The readings from the Word of God are to be listened to reverently by everyone, for they are an element of the greatest importance in the liturgy” General Instruction of the Roman Missal # 29. To hear the scriptures proclaimed is to hear the voice of God speaking right now to the people gathered together for worship.

“When the Sacred Scriptures are read in the Church, God himself speaks to his people, and Christ, present in his own Word, proclaims the Gospel.” (General Instruction of the Roman Missal, # 29).
